DO214 - Transistor
DO-214 & DO-41 Package Overview
DO-214 Series (Surface-Mount)
The DO-214 is a family of JEDEC-standardsurface-mount diode packages, available in three sub-series based on power and size capability.
| Sub-series | Common Name | Typical Size (L×W×H) | Power Capability |
|---|---|---|---|
| DO-214AC | SMA | ~4.2–4.6 mm × 2.6–2.95 mm × 2.0–2.2 mm | 1.5 W |
| DO-214AA | SMB | ~4.57 mm × 3.94 mm × 2.23 mm | Medium power |
| DO-214AB | SMC | ~5.9–7.15 mm × 6.22–7.95 mm × 2.34–2.75 mm | 5 W |
The DO-214 package features a rectangular plastic body with gull-wing terminals, designed for reflow soldering directly onto PCB pads. Its key advantages are compact size, suitability for high-density PCB layouts, and full compatibility with automated high-speed assembly. It supports currents from 1 A to several amperes and transient pulse power up to hundreds of watts, making it ideal for TVS diodes.
Applications: DC-DC power modules, USB chargers, smartphones, LED drivers, industrial control boards, and automotive electronic modules.
DO-41 Package (Through-Hole)
The DO-41, officially designated asDO-204AL under JEDEC, is a classicaxial-leaded through-hole package.
- Body size: 4.19–5.21 mm length, 2.29–2.97 mm diameter
- Lead diameter: 0.71–0.84 mm; Lead length: 25.4 mm
- Typical on-board spacing: 7.62 mm (0.3 inch)
- Typical current rating: ~1 A; Power: 0.5–1 W
DO-41 offers extremely low cost, proven reliability, and ease of manual assembly and repair. Its glass or plastic encapsulation provides good insulation and high-temperature resistance.
Applications: Consumer electronics power stabilization, industrial control, automotive circuits, general-purpose rectification, switching, and TVS protection.
Key Differences & Selection Guide
| Parameter | DO-214 (SMD) | DO-41 (Through-Hole) |
|---|---|---|
| Mounting | Surface-mount (SMT) | Through-hole (THT) |
| Board Footprint | Small, high-density | Large, requires drilling |
| Assembly | High-speed automated placement | Manual or wave soldering |
| Typical Power | 1.5 W (SMA) to 5 W (SMC) | ~0.5–1 W |
| Cost | Lower device cost, SMT line required | Extremely low device and assembly cost |
| Best For | Modern compact electronics, high-volume production | Legacy designs, repair, prototyping, cost-sensitive applications |
Selection tip: Choose DO-214 for miniaturization and automated production. Choose DO-41 for ultra-low cost, manual assembly, or repair. For higher power, step up toSMC (DO-214AB) or DO-201AD / R-6.
